I first discovered Mike when I mentioned to a friend that I was playing electric bass. He was a student of Mike's who recieved a full-scholarship for electric bass at Berklee college of music, so I valued his opinion. I studied with Mike on and off for over two years. The foundation he provides you with his knowledge of all aspects of electric basses, getting a sound, and equipment is great. He is one of those teachers who can communicate all he knows to the student. Mike has heavily influenced my own teaching style. How he teaches the instrument can be directly applied to all instruments. It was significant in the development of my guitar skills and for my love of music in general. He helped me keep an open mind and not become a "jazz nazi". He always was straight with me and honest about my progress. Thanks Mike!

Mike, You're going to hate this part, but my 72 year old Mom turned me on to your "The Deep" album and I'm sitting here listening to you guys cover Nelson's "Stolen Moments" (what a great tune, eh?). Anyway, it probably won't suprise you that I'm a guitarist (jazz chord melodies, mostly), but I have to tell you, "The Deep" is terrific! I was on the fence about going to the V. vanguard tomorrow night ( Pattituci and Brian Blade with a piano player - can you belive I don't know the headlie guy?) but am going after hearing "The Deep" tonight. JP's stuff prior to "Line by Line" was weak, but that album is for real. You have to admit, he can play. Anyway, I'd love to see you guys live and if I could avoid having to be clued in by my 72 YO Mom, I'd appreciate it, so please send me an update from time to time if possible. Otherwise, I'll see you with Mom! Peace, Jim

My bass playing journey has been off and on over the years, but Mike has always welcomed me back to study with encouragement and enthusiasm. He can teach all levels, and I would strongly encourage beginners to seek out Mike's expertise. You will learn proper technique right away, and thereby avoid having to correct bad habits in the future. There are a lot of well meaning teachers out there who really don't have the knowledge to teach the bass properly. And if you want to study six-string, you are especially blessed! I should mention the bass I have too. I have a six-string Clifford Roi lefty that I got about 6 or so years ago. It is one of the smartest purchases I ever made! It inspires you to play it, and will certainly be around to inspire future generations! Peace to all-and if you are thinking of taking lessons with Mike-JUST DO IT!!!!!!!!!

im not the average music pupil, most people start earlier in life,i got the bug to play a instrument about almost 2 years ago when my brother gave me a bass guitar that was given to him. i was 47 at the time, and i really started to get into it.i found a bass teacher in lindenhurst ny to get me started but due to schedules and work i couldnt continue with him,,, i was referred to mike frost by a few people who frequent a music store i go to , so i made the call and set up a lesson with mike.upon meeting mike,i immediately felt at ease which was a relief, no attitudes from mike , just a willingness to listen to me and work with me to help me understand the bass. lessons are fun, never boring and the hour i spend with mike just flies by. all his lessons are put down on paper in a easy to understand manner.also seeing mike perform at his shows at borders book stores is totally mind blowing!,, listening to the deep play ,only way to describe it is how can 2 basses and drums sound so fantastic! ive told mike that the lessons i take from him each month is the best 100 dollars i ever spent!its true enjoyment being able to make music and with mikes great teaching ability, one day i might even play in public myself! thanks mike for being the patient and understanding soul that your are when you give me my lessons!its obviously you really love music, the bass and teaching.i wish you much success with everything you do, sincerely ,richard h verity

I met Mike about 5 years ago. Before I met Mike I was taking lessons from Chuck Alder in Massapequa. Chuck was a great teacher for me at the time. I didn’t want to loose the quality of instruction that I found in Chuck. I was moving back to the eastern part of the island and wanted to continue my studies. Chuck stated that I should definitely contact Mike. After the first lesson with Mike I knew I wanted to study and learn from him on a regular basis. I walked out of every lesson feeling happy and confident in my abilities. I didn’t think it was possible to learn so much in one hour. It is a very satisfying feeling when you accomplish more than you think you are able to; and that’s what Mike brought out in me. Every lesson was different but at the same time melted into an overall “lesson plan”. Whether it was theory or something I brought in on CD or something that he wanted to show me; I never got tired of going. The lessons were really the highlight of my week. Mike has patience and is very committed to his craft. These are two very important qualities for teaching. Mike’s enthusiasm for his art made me want to learn more about being a better Bass player. I learned a lot about gear, types of sound, technique and so on and on hahaha (there’s waaaay too much to list)! I still listen to his lessons on tape and always have the lessons that he wrote down open on my music stand. Even though I no longer live in NY he still makes himself available to talk or email or buy strings (thanks for the SIT lights!) or whatever. If you have the time and live near a location where he is teaching, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MIKE FROST. I don’t think I will have another teacher like him; thanks for everything you have taught me. Peace. Michael

I met Mike over 24 years ago while taking a lesson with Carlos Castillo. I heard Mike play a bass the that he had made from his mother's table. After hearing him I thought, I'd better practice more. About 12 years later I walked into a DEEP concert, recognized Mike and re-introduced myself. We have been good friends since. Although I no longer play bass I am glad Mike does. I have been fortunate to be able to make basses for this outstanding player. Mike's understanding of the instrument has helped me build what many acclaim to be a world class instrument at an affordable price. It has been enjoyable watching Mike grow as a musician and person over the years. I look forward to what the future will bring. I hope that Mike will continue to work hard helping younger students discover the joys of music and more specifically the art of bass. Many have benefitted from his teaching and playing. Thanks for your support, Norsang

I started taking lesson from Mike in 1989 when he has his studio in Baldwin, and did so until he moved further out on Long Island. A combination of that move and my crazy work and family schedule had me put down the bass. (I was in a bad spot) Though my schedule is still crazy, my interest in the bass was rekindled and I e-mailed Mike to see if he could recommend a teacher in Brooklyn. He told me that though he would be moving to SC, he would be giving lessons in Lynbrook, which is about 30-40 minutes from my office in East New York. To say I was happy is an understatement; I learned and am learning so much from him. His knowledge and skill is unbelievable, and the way uses visual imagery to explain theory and technique makes things clear and makes me smile (he’s a poet and an artist). A guitarist that I work with said that he has seen a great improvement in my playing. I too see an improvement. Now, I won't be playing like Jaco anytime soon, but am on my way. (smile) Thanks Mike!

First let me say this, he's a great guy. Now, the vast amount of knowledge that Mike has for music theory and the bass guitar, construction of the instrument, the amps, speakers and effects to use to achieve the sound you want, playability and setting up an instrument, all this and the ability to convey this to a student with humility and humor...awesome. I had been playing the bass for a while, in bands since I was a teenager, and always into recording at home, I thought I new some stuff...but I felt in a rut. I've been with Mike about 8 or 9 months now...and I have noticed a great improvement in my playing and soloing. If your already a player who would like to really step up a few levels...this is the guy to see. Prepare to be blown away...THEN PREPARE TO REALLY PLAY!!!
